The Whitley Gallery
The mission of The Whitley Gallery is to showcase art created by those who are incarcerated as well as art created by others interpreting themes relevant to the criminal justice system. The Gallery offers an alternative means of rehabilitation and education through our art program in correctional facilities and also provides an opportunity for undiscovered artists to launch their career. Our goal is to go beyond our physical address and implement art programs in correctional settings through collaborative efforts with local and regional facilities. The creation of art is therapeutic, which is particularly important for individuals that are or have been incarcerated. The Whitley Gallery recognizes many of these incarcerated individuals have grown up with adverse circumstances such as poverty, abuse, violence and addiction, which has given them a disparate perspective of life. We hope to bolster self-esteem and instill positive aspirations through the creation of art. Art can replace the silent suffering and associated guilt and shame an individual feels with self-healing optimism and confidence. We want to remind those who are imprisoned that they are not forgotten; they do matter and society has not given up on them. Eighty-percent of proceeds from art sales is applied toward the payment of the artist’s court fines and costs, restitution for victims and financial assistance to their family.
